Lateral Shuffle form, muscles worked, and workout tracking

The lateral shuffle is a low, side-to-side movement drill performed in an athletic stance, working the glutes, quadriceps, adductors, and calves while training frontal-plane footwork. Athletes and lifters use it in warm-ups and conditioning intervals to develop change-of-direction quickness, hip and knee stability, and the defensive-slide mechanics common to court and field sports.

How to do Lateral Shuffle

  1. 1Set two markers several meters apart and stand between them in an athletic stance: feet wider than shoulders, hips back, knees bent, chest up.
  2. 2Push off your trailing leg and shuffle sideways toward one marker, taking quick, short steps without crossing your feet.
  3. 3Stay low the entire time, keeping your hips level rather than bobbing up and down.
  4. 4Touch or reach past the marker, then push off the outside leg to change direction and shuffle back.
  5. 5Breathe rhythmically and keep repeating for the prescribed time, maintaining your low stance even as your legs fatigue.
