Dumbbell Side Bend form, muscles worked, and workout tracking

The dumbbell side bend is a lateral-flexion exercise in which a single dumbbell held at the side is lowered and raised by bending the trunk sideways, directly loading the obliques and quadratus lumborum. Lifters use it to strengthen the lateral trunk for carries, squats, and overhead work, holding a weight on one side only so the opposite obliques do the lifting through a controlled range.

How to do Dumbbell Side Bend

  1. 1Stand tall holding a dumbbell in one hand at your side, feet hip width apart, with your free hand on your hip or behind your head.
  2. 2Brace your core and inhale as you bend sideways toward the dumbbell, letting it slide down your thigh under control.
  3. 3Bend strictly sideways in one plane; do not lean forward, twist, or let your hips shift out to the side.
  4. 4Exhale as you contract the opposite obliques to pull your torso back upright and slightly past vertical.
  5. 5Complete all reps on one side under strict control, then switch the dumbbell to the other hand and repeat.
