Dumbbell exercise

Step-Up (Dumbbell) form, muscles worked, and workout tracking

The dumbbell step-up involves driving your body up onto a box or bench one leg at a time while holding dumbbells at your sides, working the quadriceps and glutes of the lead leg. Lifters use it to build unilateral leg strength and power with low spinal loading, and its climbing pattern makes it a functional choice for athletes, hikers, and anyone addressing leg-strength asymmetries.

How to do Step-Up (Dumbbell)

  1. 1Hold a dumbbell in each hand and stand facing a box or bench roughly knee height.
  2. 2Place your whole lead foot flat on the box, brace your core, and keep your chest tall.
  3. 3Exhale as you drive through the lead heel to lift your body up, bringing the trailing foot to meet it on top without pushing off the floor.
  4. 4Avoid letting the lead knee cave inward or your torso pitch far forward.
  5. 5Inhale as you step down slowly with the trailing leg first, lowering under control, then repeat on the same side or alternate legs.
