Machine Glute Kickback form, muscles worked, and workout tracking

The machine glute kickback trains hip extension one leg at a time by pressing a platform or padded lever backward against resistance, isolating the gluteus maximus with minor hamstring assistance. Lifters use it to accumulate focused glute volume without loading the spine, and the fixed path lets them push close to failure safely, making it a staple accessory in glute hypertrophy programs.

How to do Machine Glute Kickback

  1. 1Set up in the machine with your chest against the support pad, hands on the handles, and one foot placed flat on the platform or the pad behind your knee, depending on the design.
  2. 2Brace your core and keep a neutral spine, hinging slightly at the hips as the machine requires.
  3. 3Exhale as you drive the working leg back and up until the hip is fully extended, squeezing the glute hard at the end.
  4. 4Avoid arching your lower back or swinging the leg to move more weight.
  5. 5Inhale as you return the leg under control to the start, finishing all reps before switching sides.
