Dumbbell exercise

Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift form, muscles worked, and workout tracking

The dumbbell Romanian deadlift is a hip hinge performed with dumbbells sliding down the front of the thighs, targeting the hamstrings and gluteus maximus while the spinal erectors work isometrically to hold a flat back. It is a cornerstone posterior-chain builder used for hamstring hypertrophy through a loaded stretch, for teaching hinge mechanics with easier loading than a barbell, and for training each side's grip and balance more evenly.

How to do Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

  1. 1Stand with feet hip-width apart holding a dumbbell in each hand resting against the front of your thighs.
  2. 2Inhale, brace your core, and set your shoulder blades back to lock in a flat back.
  3. 3Push your hips straight back and hinge forward, letting the dumbbells track down your thighs and shins with knees only slightly bent.
  4. 4Lower until you feel a strong hamstring stretch, typically around mid-shin, without rounding your lower back.
  5. 5Exhale and drive your hips forward to stand tall, squeezing your glutes at the top rather than leaning back.
  6. 6Keep the dumbbells close to your legs on every rep; drifting them forward shifts strain onto the lower back.
