Cable exercise

Cable Standing Hip Abduction form, muscles worked, and workout tracking

The cable standing hip abduction raises one leg out to the side against a low pulley attached at the ankle, isolating the gluteus medius and minimus while the support leg trains single-leg pelvic stability. It is used to strengthen the lateral hip through a longer, smoother resistance curve than bands provide, benefiting knee tracking, gait stability, and the outer-glute development lifters want for a fuller hip shape.

How to do Cable Standing Hip Abduction

  1. 1Attach an ankle cuff to a low pulley, fasten it to your outside ankle, and stand side-on to the machine holding the frame with your inside hand.
  2. 2Stand tall, brace your core, and shift your weight onto the inside leg closest to the machine.
  3. 3Exhale and lift the cuffed leg directly out to the side, leading with the heel and keeping your toes facing forward.
  4. 4Raise only as far as you can without hiking your hip or leaning your torso toward the machine.
  5. 5Inhale as you lower the leg back across the midline under control to keep tension, and finish all reps before switching sides.
