Decline Bench Press (Barbell) form, muscles worked, and workout tracking

The decline bench press is a barbell press performed on a bench angled with the head below the hips, emphasizing the lower fibers of the pectoralis major along with the triceps and front deltoids. Lifters use it to load the lower chest heavily and to press big weights through a shortened, shoulder-friendly range, since the decline angle reduces shoulder strain compared with flat pressing.

How to do Decline Bench Press (Barbell)

  1. 1Secure your legs under the pads of the decline bench, lie back, and grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width.
  2. 2Unrack the bar with straight arms, pull your shoulder blades together, and take a deep breath to brace.
  3. 3Lower the bar under control to your lower chest, keeping your elbows at roughly a forty-five-degree angle from your torso.
  4. 4Exhale as you press the bar back up over your lower chest without bouncing it off your ribs.
  5. 5Avoid letting your wrists roll back or your shoulder blades lose contact with the bench; rerack carefully with a spotter when training heavy.
